Mother Teresa Essay

“It is not how much we do, but how much love we put in the doing. It is not how much we give, but how much love we put in the giving. ” – Mother Teresa. This quote perfectly defines what I view as a good citizen. Mother Teresa was a Roman Catholic nun, who devoted her life to serving the poor and destitute around the world. In 1931, Mother Teresa traveled to India, originally working as a teacher. While she was there, however, the widespread poverty of Calcutta made a deep impression on her; and this caused her to start a new order called “The Missionaries of Charity”.

The main goal of this mission was to look after people, who no one else could look after. As Mother Teresa said, “Love cannot remain by itself – it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action, and that action is service. ” Mother Teresa was an example of an ordinary person that wasn’t born into money or they weren’t a celebrity with tons of money to donate to charity. In 1948, she left the nunnery to live amongst the poorest of Calcutta, India. She lived with extremely low income and food, but eventually her work with the poor of Calcutta was noticed, and recognized by the community and Indian politicians.

In 1952, she opened her first home for the dying. Over time, the work grew. Now, in 2013, there are 700 missions in over 130 countries. Just reading of all the things she’s done, and reflecting on her background helps us to realize that just an ordinary person can make a difference. A good citizen, to me at least, isn’t someone who donates millions of dollars to charity (although that’s good too), they’re someone who uses their own circumstances and helps in their own unique way. “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love. ”
