We Products and Services” shop already located

We chose not to work on having a gift shop as even though the gift shop has received a large amount of votes, second to the Cafe, we felt that having a gift shop is not as significant as Pioneer Polytechnic already has a clothing and accessories shop located in the shopping arcade and if a gift shop was implemented and built, there would be a competition and the business will be slow. Furthermore, we also chose not to work on the mobile phone accessories shop as there is a “IT Products and Services” shop already located in Pioneer Polytechnic. As our goal is to introduce a wider variety of shops for the students, this would not be a good choice as it would form competition between the 2 shops. In a nutshell, we feel that having a Cafe is the best option out of all the given choices and have decided to work on it.Having a cafe in a polytechnic has its own benefits as well. According to a journal written by Esther Vinarov – A journalist from hercampus -, one of the reasons she mentioned that the reason why students like the cafe is because of the “Selection of teas, coffees, pastries, and more, right at your fingertips.”. One of the benefits and reasons for having a cafe is that there is a selection of food and beverages for students to consume for motivating themselves to study. Instead of going to the library where the prices of the food and beverages are expensive, the prices of the food and beverages at cafes are way cheaper. (https://www.hercampus.com/school/mcgill/6-reasons-study-cafe-instead-library)- what makes you think consumer will want to come to cafe instead of other option? -> Compare cafe to other options-Benefits of choosing thisChosen Concept: Tumblr/Aesthetics -> Similar to Starbucks-why choose this -> Currently this concept is trendy                            -> Gives a more welcoming feelinghttp://noticias.infurma.es/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Hunters-Roots-2-ATDA2015-5161.jpg -Research more on the concept we have chosen -> what makes u think this concept will attract the consumer to come to the cafe?Bryan: For the concept of the Cafe, we have decided to go for a tumblr theme. With reference to other cafes like Starbucks, we have also found out that having a tumblr themed cafe is the trend now. The reason is because we feel that having a tumblr themed cafe will bring about a modern and comfortable feeling to the students. This will encourage students to visit the cafe, whether to study or to relax. Having a tumblr theme will also give off the feeling of home, allowing students to feel at home and to study or relax in a more familiar and comfortable environment.External Vendors/Internal Vendors: Decided on Internal vendors(Students from Food & Beverage Business – SBM) http://www.nyp.edu.sg/schools/sbm/full-time-courses/food-and-beverage-business.htmlCheap(er) labour (Students can work here during their internship OR for part time jobs).IF CHOOSE External Vendors (Eg. Starbucks) might not be willing to sponsor/work with us.Not agreeable with opening hours (Too early as compared to Starbucks).-Research more on why we settled on internal vendors – find good points about it-Research more on why we reject external vendors – find bad points about it-Also think about who will be manning the store? -> put into consideration on why we settle on internal vendors-Revenue? Let’s say external vendor is being accepted by Starbucks, but If choose external/internal, will it cost more/less? Refer to 3b and elaborate on more pointsShaoyuan: After much debation to choose external or internal vendors to provide supplies, we decided to settle on having internal vendors instead. By finding external vendors, the owner of the cafe would have to lose some of its power or ownership and that might lead to loss of control for the decision-making in the business. The external vendors might also charge higher price for the supplies and in the end there will not be much profit to earn as there will be the cafe’s maintenance to be taken care of. It’s also taken into consideration that by wanting external vendors(Eg. Starbucks), the vendors might not be willing to sponsor us. In addition, after seeing the statistic(Insert the statistic) on how often consumers will visit the shopping arcade whereby the most voted choice was “Visit shopping arcade once a week or less”, this would means that the sales will not be up to the vendor’s expectation and hence, the probability of getting sponsored by external vendors will decrease. Comparing between internal vendors and external vendors, internal vendors are much more trustworthy and reliable. Hence, by choosing internal vendors, we can get help from NYP F&B courses without worrying about supplies getting cut off due to loss of sponsorship. https://bizfluent.com/info-12024041-advantages-disadvantages-using-external-sources-finance.htmlExternal hiring/ Internal hiring There is another concern on external or internal hiring which we decided on internal hiring, whereby NYP Students from (Food and Beverage)F&B courses will be employed as part-timers or for their internship in Year 3. By hiring students from within NYP, it will be more cost efficient as as there will not be the hassle to pay recruiter’s fee and to also advertise the job available on social media and newspaper.Although through external hiring have its own advantages such as having more candidates to choose from, external hiring usually take a longer process to access the candidate’s experience in the vacancy available. According to a blog by Paul Slezak, a cofounder of RecruitLoop, mentioned that an average organisation can spend more than $1,000 each year on training for each employee. On the other hand, for internal hiring, there will be far less training as they will be students of F&B courses in NYP who will be much more familiar with the “ways of doing things” as they have been taught the basic knowledge in their F&B courses such as attitude, custom and etiquette. In addition, after the hiring process, the employees might not be able to fit in with the work culture of our new cafe. Thereafter, internal hiring is a better choice than external hiring.http://recruiter.fish4.co.uk/news/benefits-internal-vs-external-hiring/http://recruitloop.com/blog/keeping-it-in-house-5-reasons-why-internal-recruitment-is-the-best-place-to-start/http://smallbusiness.chron.com/advantages-disadvantages-internal-recruitment-11212.htmlhttp://smallbusiness.chron.com/advantages-internal-recruitment-sources-19134.htmlhttps://www.ziprecruiter.com/blog/why-internal-candidates-might-be-your-best-bet/Food to sell: Beverage(Coffee, Canned Drinks, Fruit Juice, Tea, Plain water w. Millennials are more interested in breakfast for dinner than any other age group before them.Hence most of the time, cafes would be having breakfast and lunch items on their food menu.http://www.australianbeverages.org/for-consumers/caffeine-facts/Why cafe concentrates most of the effort for coffees rather than other beverages?Other than the benefits of caffeine, most cafe concentrates their brewing of the coffee due to the fact that coffee is one of the highest consumed beverage for millennials and older adults.Having a cafe would attract the consumer as the cafe is placed at a polytechnic.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrlMpmJHKPg(Research Finding) Why Cafes/Restaurants use Commercial Microwave? The quick heat provided by a commercial microwave oven means you can get orders out to your customers quickly. It just so happens that many of the dishes that you need the quickest do incredibly well in the microwave. Soups, because they’re mostly water, are among the easiest and most reliable foods to reheat in a microwave. Dips that accompany chips and bread are always popular appetizers, and they can go from the fridge to ready to serve in less than five minutes.Shredded and ground meats that go into dishes like mini tacos, nachos, pulled pork, and sliders reheat perfectly in the microwave, too.https://www.katom.com/learning-center/8-reasons-need-commercial-microwave-restaurant-kitchen.htmlhttp://www.sharpusa.com/ForBusiness/CommercialCooking/CommercialMicrowaves/Models/RCD2200M.aspx Opening Hours: 8am Opening Hour – 6pm Closing Hour(Fits Student’s Schedule)OR 10AM Opening Hour – 7PM Closing Hour8AM – 10AM Not Peak Hour (Slow Business -> Low Profits)OR 7AM Opening Hour – 7PM Closing HourAccommodate Lecturers whose lessons start at 8AM – 9AM.-Research more on which timing to choose and final decision for opening and closing hoursCafe in Singapore for people coffee fix is before 10am. The main objective of having a shopping arcade is to supply a plethora of products and services  to students and staff of the polytechnic. This would provide a convenient and easy alternative for students and staff who are looking for daily necessities in the school. In addition, one of the shops has been evacuated, and four shops of different genres has offered their services for the vacated area. The four shops are: Clothing and accessories, books and stationeries, IT products and services and a convenience store. The polytechnic has organized a advisory committee to discuss and come to a decision on what kind of shop should occupy the vacated space.Purpose and objective for cafe(KS)Pioneer polytechnic vacant a space (in the school change this to the place), We are given the task to open a stall of our preference and provide a better experience in the school. We have chosen to open a cafe as it is one of the most requested store to open by the survey results primary data. The cafe would be develop by the student helper so as to understand the student needs and preference and to make the best suited environment for pioneer polytechnic staff , student and visitors.Needs for Cafe(B)Bryan: We have chosen the Cafe as according to our primary research done on the students needs, majority of the students have selected the Cafe. Also, according to the primary research done on purchasing behaviour, majority of the respondents also chose the “Food and beverage” option. In addition, in the shopping arcade, there are no shops for the food and beverage industry. As majority of the respondents has chosen the option which are along the food and beverage line and that there are no food and beverage shops as of now, we have decided that having a Cafe is the best choice for the 400 sq ft. area in Pioneer Polytechnic.Scope and Limitation(What will my group include or exclude)-(What is the group limited by?) (CW)Scope of this study: This study investigates:Reasons for choosing cafe for the vacant spaceOnly research based on Singapore context in this study.Source and Method (SY)How we collected: Primary data  Based on the information given to us where we obtained the background information, an initial survey was also conducted to study the retail needs of its student population as well as to recommend the type of products or services the new retail shop should provide.Secondary dataSecondary research was conducted through online search engines through keywords like “Benefits of Cafes” or “Things to be sold in Cafes” and data was collated from online databases. Research can be found from online bloggers and related official website(eg. www.starbucks.com.sg) as well where they shared their own experience and opinions.
